Veraison (the onset of ripening) is here in the vineyard! Until this time the vines have been focused on adding vegetative growth. Adequate vegetation (the amount of leaves) is necessary to ensure the vine will be able to fully ripen it’s fruit.
Until veraison occurs both red and white grapes look a similar green color. It can be difficult to tell them apart! During ripening white grapes turn from green to golden and red grapes turn from green to red, black, or purple. The grapes also rapidly accumulate sugar (potential alcohol) while there is a simultaneous reduction in acid.
The following photos are of our Marquette, the first grape harvested each season. Harvest is coming!
